Top Comics to Buy for July 10, 2024: Some great noir books

This week’s Top Comics to Buy for July 10 feature a pair of noir comics that are absolutely blowing my socks off right now in Profane #2 (the meta one) and Crocodile Black #3 (the internal crack up one). I just love both of these series, and, as always, I will go a bit more into why below, along with picking three other recommendations. You can also find the usual set of release lists … enjoy!

Comics to Buy for July 10, 2024

Crocodile Black #3
Writer: Phillip Kennedy Johnson
Artist: Som
Colorist: Patricio Delpeche
Letterer: Becca Carey
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
After committing a vicious assault, Danny is off his meds and nowhere to be found, sowing turmoil at home as his sister searches desperately for him, remembering the rough childhood that molded Danny. But Danny is molded by dark new ambitions… and wrestles with some absurd and disturbing visions while tumbling deeping into the world of drugs and crime.
Why It’s Cool: This gritty noir is making wonderful use of comics as a medium, depicting the hallucinations of its main character in a really interesting way. This issue the ante is upped further. Simply put, this is a tense and excellent book.
Price: $4.99

Kill All Immortals #1
Writer: Zack Kaplan
Artist: Fico Ossio
Colorist: Thiago Rocha
Letterer: Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Succession meets John Wick…with immortal Vikings. A thousand years ago, Viking explorer Erik the Red and his four adult children discovered a mysterious source of immortality. Now, in our modern world, they are an enigmatic billionaire family with a powerful banking empire. But when Erik’s only daughter, Frey Asvald, seeks to finally be free from her family’s influence, she must be prepared to reveal their supernatural secrets and confront her well-trained siblings in a deadly and epic struggle for power. Get ready for a bloodthirsty immortal fight like no other!
Why It’s Cool: This book has a little bit of media commentary and a lot of bit of violence from and against the gods. It’s got stylish art (I LOVE how Fico Ossio is colored by Thiago Rocha here) and a script that absolutely hums along. Great first issue.
Price: $3.99

Morning Star #4
Writers: David “DB” Andry and Tim Daniel
Artist: Marco Finnegan
Colorist: Jason Wordie
Letterer: Justin Birch
Publisher: Mad Cave Studios
The flame still burns! Jolene Garrett has at last found her son, Charlie. And all the Charlies have found her too. Beneath the black canopy of Big Sky stars, without her father’s once steadying influence, a lost and desperate Marabeth must recall Nathan’s lessons and learn to fend for herself.
Why It’s Cool: This deeply sad family comic with bold imagery is one of my favorite books of the year so far. I’ve heaped quite a bit of praise on it in this space at this point, so you’re probably aware that I think this book’s secret weapon is the way that Jason Wordie is coloring the page, evoking a sort of nostalgic family feeling that really enhances the storytelling. Great stuff.
Price: $4.99

Precious Metal #2
Writer: Darcy Van Poelgeest
Artist: Ian Bertram
Colorist: Matt Hollingsworth
Letterer: Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou
Publisher: Image Comics
Factions clash over control of the modified child with devastating consequences as Max confronts a past transgression-pushing him toward a disturbing moment of self-discovery.
Why It’s Cool: I don’t quite know what to make of all the action in this issue (this was true for me as well with the precursor to this book, Little Bird, until I read it as a whole), but holy cow is the artwork gorgeous and engaging. These creators have more than earned our trust, taking bold chances and doing work like nothing else out there.
Price: $5.99

Profane #2
Writer: Peter Milligan
Artist: Raul Fernandez
Colorist: Giada Marchisio
Letterer: Jeff Eckleberry
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
The list of suspects grows as gumshoe Will Profane tracks down Spud Coltrane’s killer, but the lovely Lili MacBeth threatens to throw him off the trail. But without Coltrane’s godlike hand penning his steps, will Profane walk the right path, now that it’s his to choose?
Why It’s Cool: I’ll be blunt, this book is blowing me away. If you’ve ever read detective novels, the sort that have a recurring main character, you absolutely have to read this comic, which is doing such fun things with those related tropes. It’s also a really good looking comic. Get in on this one, you won’t regret it.
Price: $4.99
