Rosh Hashanah, sometimes referred to as the Jewish New Year, is a time for celebration! Mix in a bowl the flour, salt and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Those who have been totally righteous are immediately inscribed in the Book of Life.

For this High Holy Day, pomegranates are a favorite. This fruit has symbolic significance to the Jewish people, because the fruit contains 613 seed, which mirrors the 613 commandments (mitzvoth) that Jewish people seek to follow. Also, many see the pomegranate’s seeds as representing abundance and a reminder of the people’s obedience during the prior year.

In this holiday season of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur the meaning of the various rituals is called to mind and some may question the length of the service and their significance. There was even a suggestion of doing away with the services entirely and simply celebrating as though it were an ordinary secular New Year. This story calls to mind that the central significance of these holidays are our connection to Hashem and that without that connection we may become lost along the way.
Siddur- This is a prayer book and it contains prayers for daily and Sabbath worship. It also contains some of the prayers for holidays such as Passover and Yom Kippur.
