The Rave scene, however, is much harder to pinpoint a motive to. Since 1996, tracks have remained in the mid-170 BPM range, producing what we know today as drum and bass. I am happiest with the response and how many people have been inspired by it.
Naughty by Nature is a Grammy Award-winning American hip hop trio from East Orange, New Jersey that at the time of its formation in 1989 consisted of Treach, Vin Rock, and the DJ Kay Gee. They are known for being one of the few rap acts who were able to balance success on the pop charts with hardcore rap credibility.
So I went out and bought a Gemini “DJ in a Box” set-up. I think it came with two Gemini XL 500 tables and a little Scratch mixer. I think it even came with a “low profile” baseball cap, which to this day cracks me up. Needless to say it was a terrible set-up, which is actually perfect to learn on. Locked myself in a room for around six months and started putting out mixes and never really stopped since — which also cracks me up.
Ensure that the samples you choose will suit your style. Thus, it is very important that you keep listening to a variety of samples in order to know how each would sound. Remember, you have to express the mood you want to suggest and the emotions you want to convey on your song.
I love how the Afrika Bambaata a capella sounds over the Plump DJ’s Shifting Gears mix a lot. Also really like the way the Candi Station and Bounce a capellas sounded over top of Sketch’s Pentangle. But my favorite is the Love Commandments a capella over top of breakbeat the Boy Bit Cricket Scores track.
What began as something everyone could be a part of- became something you had to “prove yourself” in to be apart of. And if you did “fit” in- you became part of the ever-building “vibe.” I remember a conversation in the mid 90s with my friend Billy, a popular breakdancer in North Florida at the time. He said, as were driving to a party in Orlando, “You see- everyone’s got a job- the dancer- the DJ- the drug-dealer. And if we all do our job right- the end result is a good “vibe.” Good god, had we made drug-dealer a “respectable profession?” The scene had become both beautiful and dangerous.
It didn’t take long before the scene developed it’s own “work uniform.” Designer sweat pants, visors, and T-Shirts hit the late scene in swarms. By 2005, Ravers were creating their own clothing lines-many going on to gain national markets. You still wore your “work uniform” to the parties, but now it was your “SCENE uniform.” Gone were the days of getting off work at the convenience store and coming straight in to the club. NOW, you went out of your way to look the part, covering yourself in Raver gear like Split, Alien Workshop, and even some national brands that had gotten involved (Puma, Adidas, etc). Those who didn’t have the gear would become “shunned.” The scene that originated as welcoming all, where everyone could be themselves, had changed. And the people changed- to FIT the scene.

I was approached by East West [Records]. That [Das EFX “Microphone Master”] was the first official remix and I was in Kansas. I had to get the job done so I brought Joc Max in and did it with him. Everything that we did, we labeled it Domecrackers. We eventually wanted to do a project called the Domecracker Project where me and him produce the whole record. But that still has yet to come to fruition. We talk about it all the time. He’s like a best friend, actually, like a brother. I speak to him all the time even outside of the music thing. So that’s what that Domecracker thing is, me and Joc.
