The 10 year “scene” from 1990-2000 in Florida certainly went through a decisive change in its course. What they achieve on stage is nothing short of astounding. Powered by the success of that song and “O.P.P.”, their self titled album went platinum.
Do you remember the fresh smell of the Florida air and the sweet sting of the wind through your hair while speeding down the interstate, windows down, blasting the baddess-ass Breakz track noone’s ever heard at 1AM- your crew in the back seat rolling their asses off, while you all knew you were about to entirely “make” the vibe of the party?

What really set things off on the underground was my group Jigmastas and Beyond Real, the single that we had out, starting the label, and working with people like J-Live, Mr. Complex, etc. etc. So I would say ’95 was the year that really started things off. I also had–my first remix was “Microphone Master” by Das EFX and “Stakes Is High” by De La Soul. I did two MC Eiht remixes. And that was it. That was the breakbeat starting point.

Their first hit as Naughty by Nature was a track called “O.P.P.,” which sampled the Jackson 5’s hit “ABC” and was released in 1991 on their self-titled album Naughty by Nature. The song peaked at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 , making it one of the most successful rap songs in history to that point in terms of crossover success on the pop charts.

Throbbing bass and thudding beats are the signatures of the venture from Travis and Hann, born out of their shared love of electronic dance music. The project started out as an avenue for the long time friends to blow off steam and generally just have a good time playing around with technology and music.

The group formed in East Orange, New in 1988. They first appeared on the music scene in 1989, releasing an album called Independent Leaders under their then name the New Style. The album generated the minor hit “Scuffin’ Those Knees”. After the release of their first album, the group was mentored by fellow New Jersey native Queen Latifah, and subsequently changed its name.

Because it is a type of dance music, drum and bass can be best appreciated to the fullest extent in clubs and discotheques. The bass is very pronounced, suggest by its name. Despite the popular preference of it being club music, many albums have been produced for personal listening. The most successful drum and bass artists to date include Pendulum, Shy FX, High Contrast, and Black Sun Empire.

On Friday, She Craves, Dented, and One Eyed Doll will be rocking Stubb’s (Do512 link). Just down the street at 6th and Red River, Mixx will be hosting one of it’s first nights of live music after being a nightclub for years. The Beat Dolls, who were an opener for Godsmack at Austin Surf Sesh, will take the stage around 9:30, followed by HMS Foolhardy. Originally from Germany, HMS Foolhardy moved to Austin and just released their EP “Grassrock” a few weeks ago at Mohawk. Closing out the night will be rock duo, Silent Alarm Activated.

The night was capped off with a salute to the production team who had backed Amanda Davids’ latest recording, including DJ Xplisit, Shai Locke, and mastering genius Karl Machat. And then – as quickly as it had captivated us, it was over. It left us wanting. It left us excited to buy Canadian music. It left us willing to pursue the discovery of underpromoted arts and culture. It left us wishing we had restocked our cars with our favourite Herbie Hancock and Mary J. Blige cd’s for the ride home.
