For 5 dollars, you won’t see a more diverse, talented group of bands tonight. The bassline in drum and bass plays half of the speed of the drums. Dance song has also been considered that has been Hardstyle classified.
It’s sleazin’ season in Sacramento this weekend as we’ve got a greased up rock and roll festival called “Midnight Mass” (sacrilege, you heathens!) and a group of gals that used to be jailbait performing downtown – perhaps as a reminder to us late-twenty and early-thirty somethings that it doesn’t all have to be Saturdays at Home Depot just yet.
Drum and bass branched off from the rave scene during the 1980s and since then, multiple elements have been incorporated into it. Jazz, rock, trance, metal, house, hip hop, and many other genres fused into the bass beats to give each track a unique feel.
Examiner: You definitely came to be a figurehead in the late-90s underground boom in New York. Can you tell me what types of things you thought really made that scene special, really made it something like a movement?
Throbbing bass and thudding beats are the signatures of the venture from Travis and Hann, born out of their shared love of electronic dance music. The project started out as an avenue for the long time friends to blow off steam and generally just have a good time playing around with technology and music.
One of the problems with the scene, helping lead to its eventual demise, was that what we were fighting FOR, happened to be exactly what we were AGAINST. As we gathered by the thousands to fight for the respect of this new musical style, when it did morph into something mainstream- we hated it and turned our back on it. 20 years later, electronica is highly respected. Artists like Lady GaGa and 3OH3 have brought techno beats to the masses. Video games have put techno in the hands of 12 year-olds, and car commercials have created techno anthems. WOW- we won! 20 years later techno is still around, and more popular than ever. The problem is it didn’t happen exactly like breakbeat we thought it would. Well, it never does. Still, part of the reason the scene is over is that we have nothing to go back and prove.
The 10 year “scene” from 1990-2000 in Florida certainly went through a decisive change in its course. In 1993 when I was introduced to the whole thing as a definitive “culture” (not just sitting around listening to music), you would get off work at your construction job or whatever, still be wearing your work uniform, and show up at these late night parties, eat an ecstasy pill, and enjoy some good company. Conversation and the “personal journey” seemed more important than anything else.
Because it is a type of dance music, drum and bass can be best appreciated to the fullest extent in clubs and discotheques. The bass is very pronounced, suggest by its name. Despite the popular preference of it being club music, many albums have been produced for personal listening. The most successful drum and bass artists to date include Pendulum, Shy FX, High Contrast, and Black Sun Empire.
After the release of Nineteen Naughty Nine: Nature’s Fury, a dispute regarding finances developed between Kay Gee and Treach, with Treach blaming Kay Gee for squandering the group’s finances. Due to these disagreements DJ Kay Gee decided to leave Naughty by Nature in late 2000. He started to develop his own record label Divine Mill. The remainder of the group, Treach and Vin Rock, released an album in 2002 called IIcons, using a variety of different producers including Da Beatminerz; the album, however, received a lukewarm reception from the public. IIcons is their last album to date.
