In the career of Zany, progress and innovation are two key words. It was the culmination of a formula I have been working on over my last few mixes. Condiment Sandwich brings forward breakbeat jazz with a touch of hip-hop.
It’s sleazin’ season in Sacramento this weekend as we’ve got a greased up rock and roll festival called “Midnight Mass” (sacrilege, you heathens!) and a group of gals that used to be jailbait performing downtown – perhaps as a reminder to us late-twenty and early-thirty somethings that it doesn’t all have to be Saturdays at Home Depot just yet.
Their first hit as Naughty by Nature was a track called “O.P.P.,” which sampled the Jackson 5’s hit “ABC” and was released in 1991 on their self-titled album Naughty by Nature. The song peaked at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 , making it one of the most successful rap songs in history to that point in terms of crossover success on the pop charts.
Fellow New Jersey native Tony D, accused Naughty by Nature of stealing a sample from his breakbeat album Music Makes You Move and using it on their track “O.P.P.” The matter was settled out of court. Between albums, the group also scored a major hit with the track “Uptown Anthem”, from the soundtrack to the 1992 film Juice.
Live drums, guitars, keys, and vocals are mixed, remixed, and sampled on the fly using cutting-edge programs. Incredibly, it’s all done without a script – and without a net.
Listening to Drop the Lime is like catching an aural virus. A feverish urge swells in your temporal lobe. You get chills. Sweat beads form on your forehead. Your mouth dries and begs for water or a chilled cocktail. Suddenly, that feverish urge grows like a hearbeat in your temple, forcing you, slowly but surely, to bang your head dizzyingly to the beat. Boom-waht-boom-waht-chagachaga-boom-waht.
Ashley’s Roach Clip (Chuck Brown and The Soul Searchers) – This sample continues to rock on air. It was notably used in a minor hit known as Girls Around the World by R&B singer Lloyd. Way back in 1987, it found its initial and much-loved use on the classic Paid in Full by Eric B. and Rakim.
Starscape Festival 2008 was definitely a dream realized. Otakon Anime Festival in Baltimore is an interesting show and always one of my most memorable. Winning the Fans Pick the DJ’s contest back in 2005 and getting a Main Room slot at CUBIK was definitely another realization of a dream. I could go on and on, but my favorite current venue to play is the Black Hole in Maryland, a little place but I love it there!
Though it is frequently played on the radio in the UK, drum and bass’s real life line is the internet. Its online presence is immense, specifically with internet radio stations dedicated to the genre and its promotion. The latest mixes also come from the internet. Two of the most popular drum and bass website are Drum and Bass Arena and Dogs On Acid.
