What began as something everyone could be a part of- became something you had to “prove yourself” in to be apart of. Starscape Festival 2008 was definitely a dream realized. I speak to him all the time even outside of the music thing.
The Sactown summer concert season is about to hit high gear – and we’re not talking about your Green Days, your Keith Urbans, and your “Bundles of Burnouts” tours with (insert ’80s hair metal band, featuring Bo Bice).
The Rave scene, however, is much harder to pinpoint a motive to. Many have believed that is because there breakbeat wasn’t one making it not even classifiable as a movement at all. This couldn’t be further from the truth-it’s just hard for anthropologists to understand that the motive was “SIMPLY MUSIC.” This single fact puts the ‘Rave” movement closer to the early 20th century American Jazz movement- than the hippies. Folks had a hard time understanding jazz, too- provoking Louie Armstrong to his famous quote, “If you have to ask- you’ll never know.” Certainly, this is also true for the “Rave” scene.
Impeach The President (The Honey Drippers) – This seemed to be preferred mostly by everyone to sample it rather than remake it. This was not only famously used in hip hop, but also in R&B and other genres. Several hip hop songs have sampled this that include Mr. Loveman by Shaggy, Bitch by Meredith Brooks, and Janet Jackson’s That’s The Way Love Goes.
EOTO is now a full time gig for the pair with a seemingly endless tour featuring over 700 shows and sold out performances in every market in the country. They fine-tune their approach and skill with each and every show they play, making the next performance more unique than the last.
The bassline in drum and bass plays half of the speed of the drums. The changing of this equation produces “faster” and “slower” sounding tracks. Guitar riffs and extra beats are added and the BPMs are made higher to alter the sound of the song. Since 1996, tracks have remained in the mid-170 BPM range, producing what we know today as drum and bass.
The 10 year “scene” from 1990-2000 in Florida certainly went through a decisive change in its course. In 1993 when I was introduced to the whole thing as a definitive “culture” (not just sitting around listening to music), you would get off work at your construction job or whatever, still be wearing your work uniform, and show up at these late night parties, eat an ecstasy pill, and enjoy some good company. Conversation and the “personal journey” seemed more important than anything else.
The Spring Massive at the Paradox is gonna be insane as will Starscape 2009. I am also headlining this huge three-day festival alongside DJ Swamp and like 50 others called Willy Wonka and the Bass Factory on June 19-21 in West Virginia, which I am sure will be an experience!
