Loveman by Shaggy, Bitch by Meredith Brooks, and Janet Jackson’s That’s The Way Love Goes. The 10 year “scene” from 1990-2000 in Florida certainly went through a decisive change in its course. So that’s what that Domecracker thing is, me and Joc.
Now that the summer season has officially began, Little Five Points will see a lot more good-quality music and entertainment, and it won’t hesitate to slap everyone in the face! Here are a few highlighting shows for the week.
The breakbeat group formed in East Orange New in They first appeared on the music scene in 1989, releasing an album called Independent Leaders under their then name the New Style. The album generated the minor hit “Scuffin’ Those Knees”. After the release of their first album, the group was mentored by fellow New Jersey native Queen Latifah, and subsequently changed its name.
Starscape Festival 2008 was definitely a dream realized. Otakon Anime Festival in Baltimore is an interesting show and always one of my most memorable. Winning the Fans Pick the DJ’s contest back in 2005 and getting a Main Room slot at CUBIK was definitely another realization of a dream. I could go on and on, but my favorite current venue to play is the Black Hole in Maryland, a little place but I love it there!
Examiner: You definitely came to be a figurehead in the late-90s underground boom in New York. Can you tell me what types of things you thought really made that scene special, really made it something like a movement?
The Rave scene, however, is much harder to pinpoint a motive to. Many have believed that is because there wasn’t one- making it not even classifiable as a “movement” at all. This couldn’t be further from the truth-it’s just hard for anthropologists to understand that the motive was “SIMPLY MUSIC.” This single fact puts the ‘Rave” movement closer to the early 20th century American Jazz movement- than the hippies. Folks had a hard time understanding jazz, too- provoking Louie Armstrong to his famous quote, “If you have to ask- you’ll never know.” Certainly, this is also true for the “Rave” scene.
Of course, EOTO’s innovative brand of live electronic music is designed for invention. What they achieve on stage is nothing short of astounding. Performed with all of the bells and whistles of a traditional electronic artist plus the addition of live instruments and vocals, the duo creates every bass ridden blast right before your eyes – without the addition of a single pre-recorded track.
