Again this is physical hardware that you are able to play. Conversation and the “personal journey” seemed more important than anything else. The 10 year “scene” from 1990-2000 in Florida certainly went through a decisive change in its course.
Now that the summer season has officially began, Little Five Points will see a lot more good-quality music and entertainment, and it won’t hesitate to slap everyone in the face! Here are a few highlighting shows for the week.
Do you remember the feeling of the first dew drop of the morning at AM while dancing with the hottest chick you’d never know her name on a rooftop surrounded by palmtrees breakbeat overlooking the skyscape of the whole city that only you knew as it really was listening to best damn downtempo DJ that you’ve ever seen?
The bassline in drum and bass plays half of the speed of the drums. The changing of this equation produces “faster” and “slower” sounding tracks. Guitar riffs and extra beats are added and the BPMs are made higher to alter the sound of the song. Since 1996, tracks have remained in the mid-170 BPM range, producing what we know today as drum and bass.
Most of the “clubs” were just one room warehouses with a couple pool tables-but ALWAYS- had the best damn DJ you ever heard, spinning this “new” music. There were always couches available, for when you fell to your “personal journey.” The dancing style we think of today hadn’t evolved yet- you just closed your eyes and did whatever the music made you do. Noone judged you. It was your “journey.” We all had our own to deal with.
Examiner: You just mentioned Rawkus Records. I know some of the artists from that time have since become disillusioned with that era, especially with Rawkus. Did you have any issues with the label yourself?
On Friday, She Craves, Dented, and One Eyed Doll will be rocking Stubb’s (Do512 link). Just down the street at 6th and Red River, Mixx will be hosting one of it’s first nights of live music after being a nightclub for years. The Beat Dolls, who were an opener for Godsmack at Austin Surf Sesh, will take the stage around 9:30, followed by HMS Foolhardy. Originally from Germany, HMS Foolhardy moved to Austin and just released their EP “Grassrock” a few weeks ago at Mohawk. Closing out the night will be rock duo, Silent Alarm Activated.
After the release of Nineteen Naughty Nine: Nature’s Fury, a dispute regarding finances developed between Kay Gee and Treach, with Treach blaming Kay Gee for squandering the group’s finances. Due to these disagreements DJ Kay Gee decided to leave Naughty by Nature in late 2000. He started to develop his own record label Divine Mill. The remainder of the group, Treach and Vin Rock, released an album in 2002 called IIcons, using a variety of different producers including Da Beatminerz; the album, however, received a lukewarm reception from the public. IIcons is their last album to date.
