The breakdown itself is thematically appropriate, as it has the strict, marked beat of a march. I covered the more mainstream bands because that was who I was familiar with. You won’t have to look far to find all the local metal bands in one place.
With the passage of time, it gets harder and harder to stand out in a given genre. This is especially true of the metalcore subgenres. So how, after so much time and so many bands, does a metalcore act create interesting music? Of Gods and Destroyers knows how, and a listen or two of their demo answers the question neatly in 5 tracks.
TS: We haven’t toured with them before, but we met the creator (Brendon Small) a while back. He seems like a really cool guy and the type of guy we can get along with well. It’s kinda funny to think that one of the biggest death metal bands right now is a cartoon band (laughs). But it’s a light hearted good time, and the fans are sitting ducks for our crazy madness.
Drummer Dirk Verbeuren, who joined in 2005 and has recorded and played live with several other artists, is also providing first-come, first-serve lessons to a pair of fans in each tour city. His technique and hand and foot speed behind the kit have to be seen to be believed. Not to worry. Keep reading.
Job For A Cowboy were up on the Hot Topic stage but I missed their set. I can say that they were one of the loudest bands of the day as they could clearly be heard at the main stage.
TS: (laughs) All of it was true, but there was some tricky editing. We went to the label jokingly and asked for a drink budget for the video and somehow, we got it. It gave us a chance to get trashed and roam around Vegas. But in reality, we had a blast in Vegas- but it was filmed all night on a Monday- totally dead night there. It was a lot of fun but it wasn’t as crazy as the video seemed. I see videos as this necessary evil and you’ve gotta have a movie sized budget in order to make a real killer video.
Stride is the band I managed back in the day and all the guys have their own solo projects. Joel Gregoire is a brilliant guitarist and just released Deranged Kids of the Electric Playground which is mind blowing. I am working with him now and he started doing Guitar Tips again. He also sits in with Ground Zero, another local band I really like. Anarchitex is an amazing punk band with roots back to the 80s.
I haven’t heard any dance punk that I liked for quite awhile. I don’t think the genre is necessarily dead itself. I think there are still more good songs to be made. I love the Buzzcocks, I would put them in that dance punk realm, considering their solo stuff. If there were people who had that as inspiration I would listen to it. But it hasn’t been doing much for me lately. That’s probably why I’ve been ignoring it in favor of techno. But I still like all kinds of music.
Death metal has changed to various different genres sense the beginning. But this will only draw in new crowds and fans of death metal. Try to listen to the different styles and genres to see if any style fits you.
