Still in many parts of the world New Year’s Day falls on a day other then the first of January. It is about religion, tradition and the joining of two families. Rosh Hashanah is a Jewish holiday that is also considered to be the Jewish New Year.
Sound the shofar! When Jericho fell, it was the shofar and the shouts of the children of Israel that brought down the City’s walls. Tracing its origins back more than five thousand years, the shofar is one of the oldest wind instruments in recorded history. Today, the shofar has a special significance and place in the lives and culture of Jewish people.
Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, is celebrated in late September or early October. The Chinese use the lunar calendar dating back 4,000 years to the waxing and the waning of the moon. Their New Year falls between January 21 and February 19. Hindus celebrate the first day of each season, so they celebrate four times each year.
The month of January was named after this god with two faces; one forever looking forward, the other looking back. Janus is always shown holding a key in his right hand, enabling him to unlock the New Year, and to lock close the old. In his left hand he holds a scepter a symbol of power.

For this High Holy Day, pomegranates are a favorite. This fruit has symbolic significance to the Jewish people, because the fruit contains 613 seed, which mirrors the 613 commandments (mitzvoth) that Jewish people seek to follow. Also, many see the pomegranate’s seeds as representing abundance and a reminder of the people’s obedience during the prior year.
